Erma’s Original Frozen Custard began as a small roadside stand outside of downtown Utica in 1942. Originally, frozen custard batch freezers were used to serve only vanilla custard in bowls to local patrons. At the time, the area around Erma’s on Auburn Road was much different than it is today. Ramona Park sat next door to the property that contained Erma’s. Auburn Road wound through the small town of Utica and was a route many east side Detroiters used to travel to Rochester, Lake Orion and beyond. People from all over the Detroit area relaxed and enjoyed the quiet of the countryside as they drove down Auburn Road and stopped at Erma’s for a simple frozen custard treat!

Over the years, the area around us continued to change into what it is today. We changed over the years too. There is now a queue line in front of the building, our backyard has been landscaped with more seating, and we have more delicious creations than ever! Having been at the same location since 1942, over five generations of Detroiters have come to love and continue to stop at Erma’s Original Frozen Custard on Auburn Road. In the spring of 2010, Erma’s Original Frozen Custard was the first business in Shelby Township to receive Historical Landmark status from the township.

Obviously, Erma’s reputation has far surpassed her humble roots. Over the years, Erma’s menu has grown extensively to include different flavors, products, and specialties – like our famous Custard Puff. Word of mouth has spread over the decades since as well. We now have customers from all over the United States and abroad. But one thing remains – an old fashioned treat at a small roadside stand still offers the best frozen custard around!
